The world gives us so few who provide a way for us all to see in new ways. It always hurts when they leave. The effused sadness that has spread through the internet from the news of Steve Jobs’ death is to be expected. We lament when things are taken from us, and I’d say that Jobs’ death (like…

Loving this Paris print by Marisa Seguin. Part of an illustrated map series she created in a beautiful portfolio of work.
I miss Paris.

jeff canham
Loving the typo-graphic style of San Francisco based artist Jeff Canham. I’ve always been a big fan of Mollusk Surf Shop’s style so it’s great to see where they get some of their great graphics!
I was really inspired by Mr. Canham’s work while creating some promotional business card for the Bird’s Boards project I’ve been mentioning here. I’ll get the...

upcycled 747 wing house
The roof of this Malibu estate is made from the wing of a 747.
The house had to be registered with the Federal Aviation Authority lest pilots report a downed plane! I wonder though, if just the right amount of wind charging up the Malibu Canyon hills would make the entire front structure take off!
The house was designed by Studio of Environmental Architecture, who have this to say about the...

Albin Holmqvist, Gustav Johansson and Niklas Johansson are really killing it with these new EF Live the Language videos for EF International Language Centers. If you saw the first few (I posted the Paris one a little over a month ago), you’ll notice that they’ve really gone above and beyond with this new set. The new locations include Los Angeles, California; Vancouver, Canada; and Sydney,...

Shot a few new boards over the weekend. Came across this creative semi finless creation. (The green squares on the bottom are computer chips. And ya thats a handle. All in all looks really fun though!!!)

uragu
Was turned on to this artisan Japanese paper maker Uragu at the aforementioned Calligrane (I’d recommend using Google Chrome’s built in translator to look at either of these pages). Beautifully made and crafted papers, envelopes and booklets. One of my favorites was this “book” of tiny envelopes. The envelopes are bound with a red wax, and you simply pull one off as needed....

Paris is full of all kinds of wonderous shops. However some of my favorites were the multitude of paper shops, many of which were located right around the corner from our apartment. My favorite, by far, is Calligrane. This minimalist shop does not look like much at first, until you start looking at each amazing piece and product.
Celebrating its 33rd birthday next year, the shop is run by a very...

dark side of the lens
South swell is pumping today in San Diego. Dawn patrol session this morning got me thinking of the hurricane action happening on the other side of the globe and how that must be stirring up some waves in Europe. I’ll be in Ireland in just a few days, a while this is not going to be a ‘surf trip’ I’m going to make a point to try to get some waves while I’m on the...

Following up on Shwood’s wooden upclycled glasses are Herrlict’s beautiful hand crafted wooden frames. Berlin-based designer Andreas Licht spends about a week handcrafting each pair of eyeglasses—from the lens holder to the signature four-pronged pin that enables the ease of swapping out lenses. Sculpted from several thin layers of wood and assembled using Japanese joinery techniques,...

periscope branding
Beautiful logo design combined with great typographic choices throughout and intricate letterpress business cards to boot. Designed by Portland’s Darrin Crescenzi and printed by KeeganMeegan, also of Portland. I love how the nautical theme is present throughout the brand yet remains tastefully subtle.

shameless self promotion
Just received these Moo Mini cards the other day. For an online digital printing service the quality, service and packaging is top notch.
I created these cards to leave behind in unique places, cafes, shops, etc. on my tour through Europe (and even a few here in SD). The nondescript format of the card is intended to create intrigue and encourage people to simply find out what the card is about by...

Working Class is a feature documentary loosely based on Charles Dickens “A Tale of Two Cities.” San Francisco artist Mike Giant and San Diego artist Mike Maxwell discuss the themes of the novel and how they are still relevant today. Both artist’s work are centered around sharply drawn characters inspired by the working class.
Growing up around San Francisco, Mike Giant was an...

process poster - black keys
Dizzyingly awesome behind the scenes look at DKNG’s poster making process. Cool story behind it as well:
During this year’s Flatstock at Austin’s SXSW a guy walked into our booth and asked if we would be interested in doing a poster for his band. It’s a pretty common question, but what came out of it was a pretty amazing opportunity for us. When I asked more, he explained that he manages...

beats, rhymes & life
Yes, a white kid from the suburbs can like hip-hop, and I love me some Tribe Called Quest. Arguably, the creators of the best “real hip-hop” ever released. So much better than most of the garbage on the radio these days parading through the genre. Tribe’s music was raw and real, combining a message and story that played to rhyme and reason in a way that you can’t help but...

I’ve gotten into handplaning over the last year or so and I have to say, it’s pretty awesome. I’m happy to see the resurgence of alternate wave riding in the sport of surfing.

Eames Lounge Chair
The Eames Lounge chair is perhaps one of the greatest chairs of all time (which is probably why I want one so badly!). If you’re not familiar with the chair already, it was designed by the husband and wife team, Charles and Ray Eames. Originally the two designed the chair as a gift for a director by the name of Billy Wilder. There wasn’t much to the chair, but the goal was for the chair to...

5 rules for a creative culture
by Ben Chestnut, Founder of Mailchimp 1. Avoid rules. Avoid order. Don’t just embrace chaos, but create a little bit of it. Constant change, from the top-down, keeps people nimble and flexible (and shows that you want constant change). 2. Give yourself and your team permission to be creative. Permission to try something new, permission to fail, permission to embarrass yourself, permission to have...
